Prov 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the
froward mouth, do I hate.
Froward – perverted and twisted (wicked, distorted)
Psalms 34: 11 Come, ye children hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD 12
What man is he that desireth life and loveth many days that he may see good 13 Keep thy tongue
from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. 14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and
pursue it. 15 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.
16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from
the earth.
- God wants us to keep our tongues from speaking evil, lying and from using
perverted talk which includes telling dirty jokes.
Proverbs 12:14 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompence
of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him.
Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the
fruit thereof.
- When all our words are good, God will satisfy us with good. Just as the deeds of a
man’s hands return to him, so also do the words of his mouth. We reap what we
sow.
Matt 12 31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto
men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. 32 And
whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever
speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the
world to come . 33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt,
and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. 34 O generation of vipers, how can ye ,
being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh . 35 A
good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of
the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men
shall speak , they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou
shalt be justified , and by thy words thou shalt be condemned
- Watch what we keep within our hearts, because that’s what will come out.
James 3: 3 Behold , we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about
their whole body. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce
winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth . 5
Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things . Behold , how great a matter a
little fire kindleth ! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our
members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on
fire of hell. 7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is
tamed , and hath been tamed of mankind : 8 But the tongue can no man tame ; it is an unruly evil,
full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men,
which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and
cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be . 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same
place sweet water and bitter? 12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine,
figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
James 1: 19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow
to wrath: 20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
- Wild, untamed tongues, can do great damage to ourselves and others. However, we
have the Holy Spirit to help tame our tongues. Sometimes it is better to say
nothing at all than to speak out in wrath.
