Is our salvation eternally secure no matter what we do?
Can we lose/forfeit our salvation at all?

General scriptures on salvation

John 3:16-18
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in
him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to
condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him
is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in
the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Romans 10:9-11
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that
God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto
righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith,
Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

•        We are saved by placing our faith (trust, dependency, reliance) in Jesus Christ
•        This is a continuing faith, not a snapshot in time
•        We have the free will to receive or reject Jesus

Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not
of works, lest any man should boast.

•        Our Salvation is made possible by the gift of God’s grace, which we access through
our faith
•        Works do not bring about salvation

Matt 10:22
22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be
saved.

Specific warnings to the Church regarding salvation

1Tim 4:1-2
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith,
giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their
conscience seared with a hot iron

•        If it were not possible to depart the faith, why does God warn that it will happen?

2 Peter 2:20-22
20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord
and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse
with them than the beginning. 21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of
righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto
them. 22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his
own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

•        This scripture warns of those who are in Christ permanently turning back to the
world and away from Christ

Matt 24: 42-51
42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. 43 But know this, that if
the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have
watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. 44 Therefore be ye also ready:
for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. 45 Who then is a faithful and wise
servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? 46
Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 47 Verily I say unto
you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. 48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his
heart, My lord delayeth his coming; 49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and
drink with the drunken; 50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for
him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, 51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his
portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

•        Jesus clearly tells us that He expects us to continue in faith and obedience until His
return.  Woe be unto the “servant” He finds doing otherwise

Rev 3:1-6
1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write ; These things saith he that hath the seven
Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest ,
and art dead. 2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I
have not found thy works perfect before God. 3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and
heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief,
and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. 4 Thou hast a few names even in
Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are
worthy. 5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out
his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his
angels. 6 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Rev 20:11-15
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the
heaven fled away ; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and
great, stand before God; and the books were opened : and another book was opened , which is
the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books,
according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell
delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their
works. 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And
whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

•        These scriptures clearly show that just because you are in the book of life today,
that doesn’t mean that Christ cannot “blot out” your name
•        If you are not in the book of life, the lake of fire awaits

Summary
Salvation is not lost accidentally, by the commission of occasional sin.  It is lost intentionally by
the willful departure and turning away from the truth of Jesus Christ.  God has given us free will
to make decisions for ourselves.  The power to choose Christ does not go away once we initially
accept Him as Lord; we must continue to abide in Him in faith and obedience and endure to the
end.  We want to hear Jesus say “Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful
over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.”
