We live in a fallen world, filled with sin and temptation.  Surrounded by so much evil in our
everyday lives (in ourselves and others), how can we possibly walk in victory through Christ?

The Problem

Romans 7
15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would , that do I not; but what I hate , that do I .
16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. 17 Now then it is
no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,)
dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I
find not.

•        We must acknowledge that sin resides within us – there can be no victory if we don’
t even recognize the need to fight
•        Avoiding the problem will not defeat it
•        Take responsibility for your own issues, but don’t make yourself responsible for
everyone else’s

1Peter 5
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking
whom he may devour : 9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are
accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

•        The devil is our adversary, there is no making peace with him
•        The world’s customs and beliefs (carnality) are contrary to a Godly life
•        Remember, you’re not the only one fighting, and you’re not just fighting for
yourself

The Solution

Romans 7
24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25 I thank God
through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the
flesh the law of sin.

•      Being born again through Jesus Christ is our only hope for living a good life in God’s
eyes

Romans 12
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living
sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed
to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is
that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

•        Our mind is the main battlefield
•        We must submit ourselves to God so that we may be delivered from carnal thinking

2Corinthians 10
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our
warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting
down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and
bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

•        We need to take action when the wrong thoughts come into our heads
•        Guard against the sources (people, tv, movies, music) that lead to evil and negative
thinking

Philippians 4
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things
are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good
report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

•        The more we fill our minds with good thoughts, the less room there will be for the
other kind
•        Be proactive, seek God in every situation

Philippians 2
13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Rom 12
21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

•        With the Spirit of God working in us and through us, we must commit ourselves to
a lifestyle of good works in His sight (love our neighbors, help the poor, pray for our
enemies)
•        Let us not be idle, but engaged in being about our Father’s business
•        Surrender and commitment to doing God’s will (good works) will overcome (master)
evil in our lives
